Keeping Trash Cans in Top Condition
There are many ways to keep trash cans in top condition. Since there are a variety of materials a trash receptacle can be built from, the method of preservation will vary from trash can to trash can. However, it is imperative that every trash can is not harboring any pests or diseases and remains structurally sound. Though the goals are the same, the method to achieve these goals will vary based on material.
Wooden Trash Cans:
Wooden trash cans are some of the easiest trash cans to damage. Before being used, wooden trash cans should be lined with a can liner or a trash container. Extra rust-proof nails should be used to reinforce the joints. It is also important to keep these trash cans on a base or supports to ensure drainage in wet weather.
Fiberglass Trash Cans:
Fiberglass trash cans are among the most durable available today—in fact, fiberglass is being used to recreate the look of stone, concrete and wood in a sturdier, longer-lasting material. To ensure cleanliness around the area of the trash can, make sure there is plenty of cleaning space all around it to sweep or mop. After all, water drainage and litter are an inevitable result of trash. Though fiberglass is one of the strongest materials available, it’s easy to become over confident in its dependability. It is extremely important to clean your receptacle as needed to prevent bacteria.
Steel Trash Cans:
Steel trash cans carry a resiliency and dependability that isn’t found in trash cans made from lesser-materials. However, steel trash cans can also be very deceiving. A steel trash can will last a long time if the proper steps are taken, such as: sandblasting, to remove mill scale and an iron phosphate application for corrosion resistance. Unfortunately, only the top quality steel trash cans have gone through these processes, leaving the remaining steel trash cans behind to rust away. Powder coating with either paint or thermoplastic coating will help maximize the longevity of trash cans. If left untreated, these lesser steel trash cans need to be kept out of the elements—or risk early and continuous decomposition. A stain, paint or waterproofing agent must be immediately applied to preserve the life of these steel trash cans.
Concrete Trash Cans:
Concrete trash cans are strong, dependable, and extremely heavy. Though wonderful for providing a consistent location for waste; concrete trash cans are so heavy, they can’t be moved by hand. Instead, machinery must be brought in to relocate the trash cans; making the trash can, and the surrounding property, more susceptible to damage. Also, if iron enriched water is disposed of in the receptacle, it can cause rust stains anywhere the water touches.
Recycled Plastic Trash Cans:
Though recycled plastic trash cans are the most durable trash cans available, they still require maintenance if they are to retain their beauty. If a recycled plastic trash can gets too much use, it is important to clean it out with soapy water and bleach before using again. If the recycled plastic trash can is out of use, and storing is necessary, make certain it is kept in a dry, protected place until needed again.
